Frequently Asked Questions at the Aquarium Fish and Coral Reef Forum

Why are my tropical fish dying?

Fish can die for any one of a number of reasons. The best way to arrive at an answer is with more questions. What are your water parameters? How large is your aquarium? Which other tropical fish are in the aquarium? What is the tank's general history? Knowing the answers to these questions and more will help narrow down what the problem may be. If your tropical fish are sick or dying, you may want to check out the salt or freshwater emergency forums first.

How do I cycle my tank?

Aquarium cycling, the process by which water parameters stabilize and become inhabitable by fish and other livestock, can be done with or without fish in the aquarium (fishless cycling). Details on both methods can be found in the forums devoted to starting and maintaining fresh and saltwater aquariums.

Can anyone recommend a test kit?

A variety of test kits are available, ranging in price, capability, method, and accuracy. A given test kit may be adequate for saltwater fish tanks, but not have the capability to test for parameters important when keeping a reef tank. Liquid test kits are generally considered more accurate than strips, though their use makes testing more time consuming. More information about test kits and other aquarium related products can be found in the product review forum.

Can somebody help me with my planted tank?

You've come to the right place! Our planted tank forum contains all sorts of information about aquatic plants and aquascaping. Our members can help you most effectively if you provide information about the species or type of plant you are looking for or need help with, your water parameters, your nutrient dosing regimen, and the size of your planted tank.

How should I stock my fish tank?

Most fish keepers begin with at least one species of fish they would like to keep in mind. Once this is decided upon, you can evaluate information about the compatibility between this species and other species you are interested in to determine which fish would make suitable tank mates. Some fish have no suitable tank mates, so a little forethought can go a long way and save a good deal of money. Our members can tell you whether fish you are interested in are compatible or direct you to a resource that can.

Why are my fish gasping at the surface of the aquarium?

Gasping at the surface is typically caused by a lack of oxygen in the water. Air pumps and power heads that help circulate water can help increase the oxygen level in the tank. There are a number of other steps that can be taken and our members will help you figure out the optimal way to increase the oxygen flow for your fish.

Why do my fish have white spots?

White spots on fish are often symptoms of a parasite commonly called ich. If left untreated, ich can spread among tank occupants and become a major problem. There are several ways to deal with ich, and the course you choose will be dictated in part by the type of aquarium. Reef tanks, for instance, should not be treated with solutions containing copper, as copper is harmful to coral and invertebrates. Temporarily increasing the temperature in your tank, dipping saltwater fish in fresh water, and using solutions or medicines are commonly employed remedies. Most fish keepers have run ins with ich at some time or another, and you will find a wealth of information here that will help you learn about and treat ich.
